More conferences should be like those organised by the ICMA, there’s in great locations and are all about sharing ideas rather than just one person standing up and giving a speech. So I was hugely chuffed to be asked by Shay to talk at their latest event after my talk in Vienna went down well. It did mean I missed the Royal Wedding though!

Below is a Slideshare of the presentation and there is an audio version coming soon to the podcast, so you should sign up as a subscriber to that to here.

And with a bit of luck in a few days I might stitch together the audio and the presentation to make a video, howvery 2.0 of me!

P.s are you a conference organiser? Or putting on a training event? You should ask me to attend…

I was fortunate enough recently to be invited to a internet marketing event held in Zagreb by the knowledgeable guys at Best Marketing. While I did my usual spiel talking about the big changes at Google over the last year or so, you know the ones we’re always hand wringing about and discussing ad-infinitum on our search blogs. Though the crowd was receptive watching sessions from Creative Agencies also in attendance it really struck me how our inward looking attitude does us know favours.

Hands up, I’m one of the worst culprits at BrightonSEO I organised two panel debates, one about ethics and one about SEO’s future, these aren’t the kind of talks that are going to present an image of an outward looking collaborative industry. (To be honest I knew this when arranging them but thought some opinionated healthy debate would be good for the day’s energy.)

While I enjoy these types of discussions we need to be looking beyond what the echo chamber cares about. Panda for example, really interesting update, my early experience is it’s not affected any clients negatively, and imagine it’s the same for 98% of the industry.

Google Instant? Can you remember how big a deal we thought it was at the time? I know it probably has influenced search behavior but enough to make you drastically reconsider your approach to delivering SEO?

Watching speakers talk about hugely creative ideas that they and their clients can be proud of, is hugely inspiring. Work you can tell your mum about, and they understand. And each and everyone of these campaigns could be improved which some search advocacy, this is where our value lies.

We have a certain framework that shapes how we understand marketing. This way of viewing the world is hugely valuable to just about any marketing strategy but all the time we’re have debates amongst ourselves that nobody outside the members of the clique understand we’re making it harder for ourselves to integrate with other practitioners who no doubt benefit from our way of thinking.

Everytime I ask someone to link to a piece of content, retweet a page
or vote on a social site I have made a deduction from my karma bank
account, by the end of the month I should always be in credit.

Something amazing attracts great links and something average doesn’t
attract anything, so amazing is the very least I should be aiming for.

I believe quality is always more important than quantity.

Links are a natural part of the way the web works, my job is to make
that natural process happen more easily.

Link building that happens in the absence of an understanding of the
overall business strategy isn’t link building it’s spam.

I am working to help a website attract links naturally, my role is a
catalyst to make that process happen more effectively.

Approaches and tactics will go in and out of fashion what lasts is
genuine relationships built on trust and respect.

If anyone, rightly or wrongly, accuses me of spam I have taken an
inappropriate approach and need to reset my barometer.
